Target group:
PhD students
Postdocs
Capacity:
15
Coordinator:
Elisabeth Weir
Description:

For a job in Academia or research, employers around the world rely on comparable aspects when recruiting academics:

  • You have to promote your merits, i.e. your achievements as a researcher
  • Management or leadership experience - and team skills - are often required
  • If the position is associated with teaching: proven teaching experience is a must
  • The acquisition of third-party funds is important (more or less - depending on the field of research)
  • A good personal network is a bonus!

Some aspects might be different in some countries (e.g. the role of committee work in Germany etc), but this is mainly what an academic profile consists of - besides expert skills from your field of research.
In the workshop we will

  • Cover all aspects to define your academic profile
  • Develop a strategy for academic career planning in and outside of Germany
  • Develop an exit strategy (plan B) in case that an academic career might not work out
  • Discuss ways of promoting your academic merits (e.g. academic portfolio)

The workshop will be divided into 3 parts:

1) preparation phase (approx. 2 hours individual learning)

2) online attendance day (May 9th, 9:00 - 13:30)

3) transfer phase (approx. 2 hours individual learning).

Participation:

• To participate you need a laptop or computer with audio / video function (microphone and camera). You also need a stable internet connection.

• Preparation phase - prerequisite for participation: approx. 2 hours, on your own time: in the moodle course room you will find materials and tasks to prepare. If necessary, these tasks are supervised by the trainer.

• You will receive an individual login code for the moodle course room for the workshop on one day prior to the preparation phase at the latest.

• On the online attendance date, we will work together on interactive learning situations from 9:00 am to around 1:30 pm (short breaks)

• Transfer phase: approx. 2 hours, on your own time;  in the moodle course room you will receive feedback, can ask further questions and exchange ideas with the trainer and the other participants.
